The Mersey Valley Warden Service is committed to working to improve the environment. We recognise that this means more than just looking after our sites for wildlife. We have written an ‘eco-code’ that will provide us with guidelines on how to be more environmentally friendly in our offices as well as out in the Valley.
In 2007 we were awarded eco-centre status. It confirms that we are working in the best way possible to protect the environment.
Many of the changes we are making are small, but altogether they will make a big difference. Here are some examples:
- Reducing the amount of water we use by putting a full bottle in the toilet cisterns. This saves a litre of water with each flush.
- Reusing envelopes and making sure we write on both sides of pieces of paper before we recycle them.
- Making sure we buy recycled paper.
- Reducing the amount of electricity we use by remembering to switch lights of when we leave the room
- Only filling the kettle with as much water as we need each time.
- Use energy saving light bulbs and re-chargeable batteries.
Mersey Valley Eco Code The Eco-code for Chorlton Water Park Local Nature Reserve and the Mersey Valley Visitor Centre has been developed in order to demonstrate our commitment to environmental improvements across the whole service. The actions listed are either already in place or are to be addressed over the next year. The Eco-code will be updated annually and will incorporate new actions that we feel should be taken to achieve the objective of continual improvement in our environmental performance. All Mersey Valley staff, visitors, volunteers and any other interested parties are actively encouraged to contribute to our Eco-code in the form of ideas and suggestions, whether formal or informal, we welcome all involvement.
- To review our Environmental Policy regularly and to endeavour to use the Eco-Code to plan future activities.
- To endeavor to involve the local community in our environmental work and to ensure all groups and organisations are aware of our Environmental Policy.
- To continue to work using the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle principle in waste minimisation.
- To reduce the amount of water consumed by the centre's activities.
To reduce the amount of energy consumed and energy wastage.
To endeavour to check suppliers’ environmental credentials and buy recycled and sustainable products when possible.
To care for our outdoor environment by managing the centre grounds in an environmentally sensitive way
