Chorlton Water Park

At the end of Maitland Avenue in Chorlton, this is one of the most popular sites in the Valley. There is a large lake surrounded by woodland, plenty of footpaths around the lake, a play area for children and picnic tables. The lake offers canoeing, sailing and angling. Wardens are based on site that can give you more information.Chorlton Water Park stands on the site of Barlow Hall Farm. As recently as the 1950's the last tenant farmer flooded his fields with water from the River Mersey in time-honoured fashion.
He recalls that: the sluice gates were never opened for the first flood as this brought down the rubbish: the second flood brought down rich mud.

Gravel extraction during the construction of the M63 motorway left a large pit, part of which was developed as a water park and officially opened in September 1978.
The lake is well stocked with course fish and has developed into a popular fishery. It has 80 fixed fishing platforms and good access for wheelchairs on the south side of the lake. The average depth of the lake is 9 feet with deeper areas around the favoured pegs.

The lake accommodates a variety of water based activities including dinghy sailing and windsurfing. The lake size makes it ideal for beginners and experts alike. The absence of watersports during the winter months allows the lake to become an important refuge for wildfowl.

From a peaceful stroll to a strenuous run around the orienteering course the park has something for everyone. The paths around the lake are suitable for pram- pushers, wheelchair users, cyclists and horse riders.Occupying the site of the old Barlow Hall Farm, Chorlton Water Park is now one of the most popular sites in the Mersey Valley. Like Sale Water Park 1 km downstream, the lake at Chorlton was excavated in the early 1970's to provide gravel for the M63 motorway. Since then the area has been developed to cater for all kinds of activities in a countryside setting. The lake is also a nationally important over-wintering site for wildfowl. Seven kilometres of footpaths and bridle ways enable visitors to explore 70 ha / 170 acres of urban countryside woodland, wetland and grassland.
